The Orielles – ‘Only You Left’

‘Three Halves’ opens the record in shoegazey fashion, although there’s a touch of C86 jangliness running through. Think of the meeting point between Arab Strap and Heavenly and you’re halfway there. It then picks up the pace towards the end, while ‘Shadow of You Appears’ is more restrained with its tribal Radiohead-esque guitars, fractured strings and plea to ‘just disown me’.

‘Tears Are’ recalls ‘Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea’-era PJ Harvey as the band sing about having a ‘bitter taste’ and how ‘I can’t drop but I can’t fall’ before ‘Ember”s driving bass and experimental gothic leanings provide the backing to a tale about a ‘meeting under midnight’. ‘The Woodland Has Returned’ is another slower song with dual vocals, strings at the forefront and a touch of Bjork or Tunng running through it: ‘There’s a splinter in my hand’.

‘All in Metal’ is more dreamy to start with the encouraging words of ‘there’ll always be a way through’ before the band add flourishes of riffage. Recent single ‘You Are Eating a Part of Yourself’ is more atmospheric with its layered effects and almost ambient (at times nature) tapping into post rock, before finishing with the despairing words: ‘You’re choosing a side you don’t really like, chewing until nothing’s left’.

‘Whatever (I May Not Feel So Close)’ begins with breezy yet melancholic guitar hooks before looking ahead and talking about lights shining through and the power of miracles and change. The closing ‘To Undo the World Itself’ is another high-reaching and hair-raising piece, finishing a record that demands your attention with aplomb.
