‘Lost On You’ finds Tigers Jaw’s Ben Walsh (guitar, vocals) and Brianna Collins (keys, vocals) attempting to navigating the stage of middle adulthood where you’re meant to have your shit together, but then you realise nobody really does…
There’s a DIY feel to the short and sweet opener ‘It’s OK’, a song that asks ‘Am I really in charge of the words that come out?’ and ponders how ‘I am looking for peace in a world full of doubt. It finishes with a blast of unexpected but welcome piano notes. ‘Primary Colors’ follows with dual vocals and power-pop guitar hooks turned up. ‘Head is Like a Sinking Stone’ continues with super-sweet hooks, singalong moments and a sense of self-deprecation: ‘At the worse times, I’ve got a pretty good idea of what’s been going wrong’.
‘Anxious Blade’ not only has a great title but also a floaty soundscape that perfectly complements its central question: ‘Is this real or just a dream?’. ‘Baptized on Redwood Drive’ recalls The Hotelier as the band demand you ‘change your life without a consequence’. ‘BREEZER’ is all fuzzy garage rock riffs and pulsating drums, before ‘Ghost’ adds a groove to get your toes tapping.
‘Light Leaks Through’ opens with a line about panic attacks before later talking about being ‘scared of my reflection, I see it for what it is’. Its sound is a combination of emo revival and Manchester Orchestra as Tigers Jaw start looking ahead: ‘The version of the person that you miss does not exist. ‘Roses + Thorns’ slows things down with the message ‘My heart’s set on you’ at its core, while ‘Lost On You’ offers a plea to ‘kill all the bitterness’ as you discover the difference between the story and the truth: ‘I’m like a traveller now in my hometown’.
With its vibrant melodies, thoughtful lyrics and powerful bite, you’ll be glad to have found ‘Lost On You’.
