Tori Amos has shared ‘Shush’, the second song to be taken from forthcoming album ‘In Times of Dragons’ (out on 1 May via Universal/Fontana). Each song on the album follows the life of one of 10 interconnected characters and in ‘Shush’ we get to meet a battle-hardened ‘lizard demon’ billionaire, who embodies the end result of unchecked power and concentrated wealth. These traits have extended into the upper reaches of politics…
This dangerous man also happened to meet – and marry – the fictionalised version of Tori presented in the song decades earlier, with the singer-songwriter saying: ‘He represents what we’re dealing with right now. He sees congressmen, senators, and even probably presidents, as people who answer to him and other billionaires, who don’t think you and I should vote. He’s trying to develop the kind of feudal system we had hundreds of years ago. But it doesn’t look like it once did. We don’t look like we’re in the trenches, in the muck. We have all the cool, digital devices now. So it looks different. But it has the same philosophy.’
Clocking in at over 6 minutes with a raw intensity in both Tori’s vocals and the piano playing, there’s a number of statements that offer a reflection of current affairs: ‘I no longer believe that freedom and democracy are compatible’…
