Club Night – ‘Joy Coming Down’ album review

Club Night follow up their 2019 debut album ‘What Life’ with ‘Joy Coming Down’, a record that has themes of loss and mortality at its core – albeit with hope shining through.

Opener ‘Expo’ is all twinkly and intricate emo guitar work to start with before quickly changing course into something more mathy with post-hardcore leanings – think Broken Social Scene taking on an At the Drive-in cover. ‘Lake’ follows and it’s a brutalising piece of fightpop with a punky and spiky attitude running through: ‘What happened to you?’

Woozy bass, chunky riffs, space age synths and chants of ‘And on and on it goes’ combine on the Mae Shi-esque ‘Palace’, while ‘Rot’ is more glitchy and electronic. ‘Judah’ has bursts of power-pop hooks and thunderous drums amidst its more tender moments – which have a lullaby-esque quality. Other touchpoints may be Mewithoutyou and Los Campesinos!, especially on the raw and emotive ‘Station’.

The closing ‘Rabbit’ veers into something more danceable – although with distortion, swirling guitar lines, and chanted vocals demanding you ‘raise the alarm’. Although it’s an album about loss, there’s so much to gain when you wrap your ears around Club Night’s latest release.
