Adult Mom (an indie-rock quartet made up of Stevie Knipe, Olivia Battell, Allegra Eidinger and Lily Mastrodimos) release their fourth album ‘Natural Causes’ on 9 May, 2025 via Epitaph Records. Inspired by R.E.M and Lucinda Williams, the album finds Stevie examining their own queerness, separating it from learned straightness, and chronicling their battle with cancer.

Fierce drums and melodic guitar open ‘Door is Your Hand’, a breezy and bittersweet tale that finds Stevie saying ‘Wishing you were dead is the only way top cope with my head’. They go on to claim ‘I wait for you to fall asleep so I can cry comfortably’ over Soccer Mommy-esque sadpop sounds. ’21’ finds Stevie trying to find a better version of themselves amidst nostalgic warmth and bursts of brass – it wouldn’t be out of place on the Shrill soundtrack – and ‘Benadryl’ is more stripped back as they look back on their treatment: ‘I talk shit with the nurses’; ‘I try to see the finish route but the light at the end keeps getting further out’.

‘Crystal’ has an anti-folk vibe running through with its personal storytelling, while ‘You in June’ puts shame and anxiety at the forefront amidst some punk rock riffs and words about moving on: ‘I started to forget about you’. ‘How About Now’ focuses on mortality and how Stevie had to make some literal life-or-death decisions and how this impacted them: ‘I cling to what I can’t control and barely grieve the things the cancer stole’. This ends in more defiant and optimistic mood: ‘I’ll get through it. I’ll survive it’.

The closing ‘Headline’ finishes the record with a flourish – blending power pop hooks with more arty moments.

‘Natural Causes’ is a deeply personal record that focuses on how we’re always learning, and it’s thoroughly rewarding.
