Divorce – ‘Wendolene’

Divorce have shared the Wallace and Gromit-referencing ‘Wendolene’ to mark the release of the deluxe edition of their debut album ‘Drive to Goldenhammer’. This new release features three brand new songs, early demos and BBC radio sessions – including their cover of Queen’s ‘I Want to Break Free’

Singer and guitarist Felix Mackenzie- Barrow describes ‘Wendolene’ as ‘the journey onwards, towards wherever it is we feel we want to go’. The title is inspired by a character in Wallace and Gromit’s ‘A Close Shave’ (there’s also a nice Easter egg in the video), while the sound has a subtly experimental edge that fits seamlessly with the band’s trademark folky chamber pop sound.

Darker round the edges than much of ‘Drive to Goldenhammer’, it opens with a burst of piano before delivering beats-enhanced observations about hating apples, finding fruit, hiding scars, and kissing all over a naked body they’ve been desiring for years (or maybe even decades): ‘I’m like a deer in bed with you shaking’. There’s real pride in the harmonies as they declare : ‘Wendolene, we’re still breathing’.
