cheerbleederz – ‘Prove Me Wrong’ EP review

cheerbleedrz prove me wrong EP artwork

cheerbleederz, a DIY supergroup made up of members of Fresh, ME REX, Felicette and Happy Accidents, return with ‘Prove Me Wrong’ – an EP filled with songs inspired by loss, love, grief, hope and acceptance. But ultimately it’s about taking control and rising above negative toxicity…

Lead single ‘I Deserved Better’ opens the EP with woozy Spook School-esque guitar hooks and a defiant statement of the title, blending this with lots of ‘ba, ba, ba”s and a touch of sadness: ‘I feel so lonely all the time’. ‘Passenger Princess’ follows with an art-pop sound that evokes the spirit of Johnny Foreigner, while there’s real love in the declaration: ‘I’ve got it figured out, all I want to do is drive around with you’. Of course, this is a cheerbleederz song so things change in tone and tempo towards the end: ‘It’s taken a wrong turn’.

The two minutes of ‘Sleepwalking’ reminded us of Graham Coxon’s solo material or Pavement as the trio ponder if this is all there is, while the closing ‘You Got It In For Me’ has a trance-like opening that morphs into punk-rock riffs, the band taking aim at social media woes: ‘I liked all your posts’ being followed by ‘psycho social hide and seek, searching for your honesty’.

With these observations on modern life (it’s not all rubbish), cheerbleederz have nothing left to prove. This EP is another triumph.
