Made up of Eva and Grace Tedeschi, sister duo The Cords are all set to release their debut, self-titled album via Skep Wax (UK/Europe) and Slumberland Records (US) on 26 September, 2025. Formed when they started playing drums as kids and realised they enjoyed ’80s and ’90s indie music more than the other kids round their way, The Cords have already played shows with The Vaselines, Camera Obscura, Belle and Sebastian and Chime School.
The record opens with ‘Fabulist’, a single that feels instantly familiar as it blends uplifting jangle pop hooks with the attitude of The Primitives. This is followed by ‘Just Don’t Know (How to be You)’, a speedy track that finds the sisters having an all-too familiar conversation for anyone who has a sibling: ‘You stole my shoes’.
The first in a series of six songs clocking in under 2 minutes, ‘October’ has a punkier aesthetic shining through with touches of Violent Femmes as they lament the fact ‘It’s just not the same as it was’ while ‘Vera’ catchy ‘ba-ba-ba”s and a wistful admission that ‘things will never be the same again. There’s a more arty sound to ‘Doubt It’s Gonna Change’, a song that channels frustration amidst joyful handclaps: ‘Maybe you can try listening to the song, maybe this time you can sing along’.
‘I’m Not Sad’, another recent single throws some emo elements into the mix while the sisters assure you ‘I would have spent all day in bed if I had been that sad’. ‘Yes It’s True’ moves into new territory with its gothic, shoegaze sound. The uneasiness of its title shines through on ‘Weird Feeling’, a woozy piece backing anxious words about taking a step back in after taking a step outside: ‘I need to get some air’.
‘Done With You’ is a break-up song brimming with excitement as they move on from someone stuck in their ways – ‘Time to say goodbye’ – while ‘Rather Not Say’ celebrates the freedom of putting yourself first: ‘Now I see it’s not so bad even though it makes me sad’. The album comes to an end with the aptly titled short and sweet sound of ‘When I Said Goodbye’.
The Cords are the kind of indie-pop band you just can’t resist – fun, fresh and fantastic.
