Divorce’s guitarist and co-vocalist Felix Mackenzie-Barrow has shared ‘Song By A Stranger’, the first song to be released under his Book of Churches moniker. The single comes ahead of the side-project’s self-titled debut album which comes out on 6 March, 2026.
With each song written one day and recorded the next, the album finds Felix navigating a relationship breakdown while channelling the spirit of emotion-led troubadours including Leonard Cohen and Nick Drake.
‘Song By A Stranger’ opens the album as Felix tries to make sense of his physical and emotional distance, while also cross-examining his past behaviour: ‘I could have been what you needed but I locked all the keys away’. He delivers these personal and powerful lines against an understated acoustic guitar that reminded us of early Villagers depth-led alt-folk: ‘You are a song by a stranger’.
