Cast follow up their support slot at the Oasis reunion last year with brand new album ‘Yeah Yeah Yeah’, a record John Power says ‘arrived out of the blue’.
John declares ‘Is there something you want me to say?’ on album opener ‘Poison Vine’ before backing up on himself and asking ‘Is there something you want to hear? Let me whisper gently in your ear’ before finishing in soulful style, complete with guest vocals from the legendary PP Arnold. ‘Don’t Look Away’ follows with a stop-start, psych-tinged intro and words of love – ‘Let me see you smile, my saving grace’ – before a gospel finish.
‘Free Love’ slows things down with John Barry-esque atmospherics and powerful words: ‘All I need is love and sensitivity’. There’s a touch of new wave sound in ‘Say Something New’ before Cast move into funk mode on ‘Way It’s Gotta Be’. This soulful bass line is soon joined by crunchy riffs that have a touch of The Stone Roses. ‘Devil and the Deep’ falls somewhere between fellow Liverpudlians The Coral and cult favourite Captain Beefheart as John talks about ‘Not knowing where I’m going to be, caring where I’ve been’ over eerie effects.
‘Weight of the World’ is the most ‘Britpop’ of the songs on the record so far with its luscious melodies and hooks distinctly upbeat as opposed to its weary words: ‘I have to ask ‘when will things change?’ People smile, they often say ‘tomorrow brings another day”. The wall of sound effect reappears on ‘Teardrops’ while ‘Birds Heading South’ closes the record with a poignant and grandiose flourish.
‘Yeah Yeah Yeah’ is the perfect title for this boisterous and bright return.
