LAPêCHE’s third full-length album ‘Autotelic’ – named after the idea of doing something for its own sake – is a record that feels very much in the moment. With words anchored in Krista Holly Diem’s clear-eyed vulnerability, the album focuses on both comfort and confrontation.
Potent power pop hooks signal the start of album opener ‘Autotelic Nosebleed’. It’s a joyful sound that can’t fail to raise a smile and this continues through its Tigers Jaw-esque breakdown. ‘Double Knotted’ follows with emo stylings at the forefront, while ‘Heart NY’ has an eye-opening first line about living underwater before moving onto heartbreak and doubts: ‘Do I feel things?’
‘Happy 4 U’ has a killer bass line driving its ’90s alt-rock sound, while ‘Parallel Park’ has a hugely anthemic sound and words about the sky burning down. ‘Monsoon’ harks back to the emo renaissance, while ‘First Time Caller’ is slower and more deliberate. It’s grittier and has swathes of feedback running through. The closing track, ‘Phantom of Cinder’, could be a song by a band called Depeche Mode for Cutie.
‘Autotelic’ is an all-encompassing album you’ll adore.
