Good Kid – ‘Can We Hang Out Sometime?’ album review

Recorded in Los Angeles with John Congleton (Lana Del Rey, St. Vincent), Good Kid’s new album ‘Can We Hang Out Sometime?’ centres around the importance of connection and how anxiety, miscommunication and self-doubt can strain relationships with friends, lovers, family and yourself.

‘Rift’ opens the record in woozy and melodic fashion, the catchy hooks backing the words ‘I lived a life you won’t forget. I lived a life before you’. This is followed by the pure, scuzzy power pop of ‘Eastside’, a song that sits somewhere between White Denim and The Chats with its defiant shout of ‘I’m not going away’. ‘Coffee’ continues in this breezy fashion, although now there’s some sadness shining through: ‘Nobody wants to talk to me, I want to talk to you’.

‘Cicada’ blends sunshine-infused melodies and pure love – ‘You’re everything I think of’ – before ‘Tea Leaves’ finds the band embracing some Albert Hammond Jr-style riffs. ‘Hello Again’ is a direct hit with a catchy chorus and self-deprecating words: ‘Wake up again alone with me. Hello again, reluctantly’. There’s a fun bass line driving ‘Wall’, before ‘Ginger Lemonade’ rounds off the record in nostalgia-fuelled style as the band sing about ‘chaos and endless roads’ and ask the title of the album: ‘Can we hang out sometime?’

With music this cool, catchy and captivating, of course we can.
