With an original mission statement of ‘If you’ve got too many chords in it, you’re wrong’, much-hyped Manchester-based four piece Westside Cowboy release their debut album ‘It Goes On’. Focusing on the joy that can be found in each other’s company and the organic chemistry that resonates with this, it’s a record the band want to sound triumphant.

‘Kick Stones (The Boys)’ opens the record in beguiling, hypnotic style. A throwback with a touch of Violent Femmes-style brashness, it finds the band singing ‘Have you heard?’ in unison. ‘Paper Chains’ follows with an air of melancholy – ‘Leave the paper chains inside’ – as the band talk about there being a ‘cold feeling in the air tonight’ before delivering a clattering drum solo, while recent single ‘Dobro’ has more of a bluesy tone. There’s a touch of the Rolling Stones or The Doors – and even the psychedelic stylings of The La’s – as the band sing ‘Please come home’.

‘Well Done Kid You Did It’ is more inward looking and therapeutic as the band look at their past behaviour: ‘If you ever find out what happened to me, hold on to that thought and save me the pain. Don’t break it to me’. There’s a touch of Big Thief in ‘Worried Age’, while ‘Big Wheels’ is reflective and nostalgic with memories of Blockbuster DVDs and visions in dreams. ‘Pin Up Boys’ looks back on life with a cutting wisdom beyond your years: ‘You tried to kill me’. ‘Coyote’ takes you back to the anti-folk movement of the early 2000s with its simple, rough and ready DIY sound, while ‘Take My Leaving as I Love’ is stripped back and raw sadpop: ‘Just quit while you’re ahead’.

‘You Could Have Died There’ closes the album with talk of blue lights and how it feels to live in uncertain terms – ‘I was outside looking in through the crack I was allowed’ – before finishing with a repeat of the words ‘Please keep me around’. With a debut record this accessible and addictive, we’re all going to be doing that.
