Based in Brighton, Ancient Times was a one-man project started in the middle of 2012 by George Smale that has since evolved into a live band. Having recently supported The Chapman Family, there is a wave of optimism as they get ready to release new single ‘Nightschool’ on 25 February. The EP will be released on a split cassette with the band Furrow via Coastal Wizards.
While the song may share a title with one of The Xcerts’ finest, this is a more serene and dreamy affair. Capturing the essence of jangly 80s indie-pop with a distinct nod to The Smiths in the Morrissey-style vocals, there is enough personal distinction and identity to mark Ancient Times out and they’d certainly fit in the current wave of shoegaze bands being led by the likes of The History of Apple Pie. Throughout the 4 minutes, George pours his heart out as he talks of this particular Nightschool feeling cold and how he has been waiting far too long, while also offering the comforting line ‘I’d like to think I’d help you if you’d ask’. With friends Hot Glass also releasing their EP via cassette, it appears Brighton has fallen in love with the 80s again – and that’s not a bad thing at all.
