With a New Year comes a new batch of albums to work your way through and 2014 is already looking exciting. Below, we look at some of the bands whose albums we believe will be soundtracking our 12 months ahead…
A long time coming, but with their previous releases, Spring Offensive have already proved themselves over and over again as a band to fall in love with. From the dark intensity of ‘The River’ to the more accessible ‘Speak’, they have shown they’re adept at moulding all genres into something that will spark your imagination. Now, after achieving their target through Pledge, we’ll get to hear a debut long-player.
‘Mount Modern’ was one of the best albums of 2011 and next year we will finally get to hear Snævar Njáll Albertsson’s second long-player. Full of wry observations about life, parenthood and culture in general, along with gentle and intricate melodies, we hope to hear more from this most talented individual.
This Norwegian band had the knack of making you smile from ear to ear, whether you listened to the album ‘To the Treetops’ or were lucky enough to see one of their buoyant live shows, which involved huge band sing- and stomp-alongs. Now we look forward to their new record, hoping they retain the same level of mischief, fun and appetite for hooks and melody as before, as well as further going on to enhance the more settled sound that was indicated on 2012’s winter EP ‘Female Lead’.
We’ve never shied away from our love of The Xcerts and we’ll finally get the follow-up to ‘Scatterbrain’ in 2014. One of the hardest working bands around, they’ve continued to tour while prepping this third album, with the few new songs aired in the live arena sounding absolutely huge. Full of riffs and choruses, it just has to be their year.
