Benjamin Shaw – Top 5 Influences and Digs

Benjamin Shaw Megadead influences

Following the release of his ‘Megadead’ album, we asked Audio Antihero Records signing Benjamin Shaw to talk us through five songs that influence his sound and five that he’s enjoying right now.

Influences

Katie Dey – ‘Unkillable

I feel like my album is a whole big mess of influences, or things I’ve definitely tried to steal. The first being everything Katie Dey touches. I don’t know how she gets the sounds she does, but her production is incredible and songs gorgeous.

Casiotone for the Painfully Alone – ‘We Have Mice

I always knew about Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, but I think the overly twee name put me off from ever diving in too deep. But I guess now since I have aged significantly and am still a white male singer-songwriter, I have absolutely no leg to stand on. I ❤ CTFTPA.

Four Tet – ‘Morning Side

Yeeahh Four Tet. His textures and repetitive melodies can keep me happy for hours. I’m shit at producing beats, but when I do, I try and copy Four Tet’s.

Super Furry Animals – ‘Slow Life

Super Furry Animals have ALWAYS held a special place in my life, both in my love of music and my idea of art itself. Also, this year I finally found an orange rain jacket just like the one I saw Gruff wear in the Play it Cool video in like 1997. SFAOK.

Smudge – ‘Divan

Because she’s Australian, my partner hates everything Australian. We live here now, and she hates it even more. But much like Australia’s politics, I still have a 90s obsession. Also, the pub I am at just played some Smudge so I’m ALL IN. And ok, drunk.

Digs

Sun Ra – ‘Springtime Again

There’s a grocery shop near me that is a fucking nightmare. It’s cheap and has all the organic things that white people go crazy for, and I have a panic attack every time I even go close to it. It’s. So. Busy. I’ve started listening to this song while I’m there to make it ok.

Camp Cope – ‘How to Socialise and Make Friends

I love this band, and everything they do and stand for. The end of this song gives me chills every time.

Pool Kids – ‘$5 Subtweet

I usually snub my nose at musical technicianship, very definitely because of my own insecurities, but oh boy, imagine being this good at anything. Watching it being recreated live on video here too is something else. Hang on, I’m just gonna watch it again.

Okin Osan – ‘I Wanna Be That Girl

I was on a compilation album with Okin Osan last year, so when I saw them play live I went to say hi and Rose from the band pretended to know who I was, which was super polite.

Swet Shop Boys – ‘Aaja

Swet Shop Boys sure as hell don’t need me bigging them up, but I just love them so much. Enjoy.
