Kate Davis – ‘Oh No’ (Daniel Johnston cover)

Kate Davis has shared her take on Daniel Johnston’s ‘Oh No’ ahead of the release of a covers album (called ‘Strange Boy’) on 15 January that will find the singer-songwriter reworking the songs found on Daniel’s seminal ‘Retired Boxer’.

The record will be released by Solitaire Records and the Hi, How Are You Project with a portion of the proceeds from sales and streaming going to the mental health charity. Fittingly lo-fi, Kate delivers Daniel’s words with understandable pathos – especially the repeats of the title and that striking line about a cat meeting its fate while ‘most get hit by a car’ – and the sound has elements of both bedroom pop and modern emo.
