After looking up to the skies and filling 2020’s album ‘Wake Up Calls’ with the sounds of the UK’s endangered bird species, multi-instrumentalist Cosmo Sheldrake will be heading deep underwater with new EP ‘Wild Wet World’. Lead single ‘Bathed in Sound’ features Cosmo’s vocals alongside humpback whales, sperm whales, long horn sculpin, oyster toad fish, a buck-toothed parrot fish and a bleached coral reef off Lizard Island. Cosmo says: ‘Bathed In Sound is a song about trying to imagine myself as a whale floating in the ocean, immersed in a liquid medium full of sound, surrounded by plankton and the immense wild wetness of the ocean.’
From the initial whale sounds through to the effects and Cosmo’s gliding, dreamy vocals, this is a powerful piece of experimental pop that makes you feel like you’re joining in on this journey: ‘Closed my eyes, went to sleep and drifted downwards. I dreamt of whales floating there’. Cosmo then goes on to talk about how these whales were wrapped in plankton and then the wonders of what lies beneath us. It’s a powerful piece that’s also oddly reminiscent of that underwater Bojack Horseman episode.
A percentage of the publishing royalties from this track will be donated to “The Earth” as part of Brian Eno’s Earth Percent campaign, “a charity providing a simple way for the music industry to support the most impactful organisations addressing the climate emergency.” details on the grant giving strategy can be found here.
