Mandy, Indiana are all set to release their second album – and first on new home Sacred Bones – ‘URGH’ on 6 February, 2026. With a focus on self-determination, resilience and hope for a brighter future, the album – with lyrics largely in Valentine Caulfield’s native French – was written during an intense and eerie residency at a studio house near Leeds before being recorded across Berlin and Greater Manchester. Both Valentine and drummer Alex Macdougall faced multiple rounds of surgery during the process.
Opener ‘Sevastopol’ starts with an intense drilling sound before falling somewhere between Sleigh Bells and Charli XCX – all within an all-too-short running time. This is followed by the throbbing bass of ‘Magazine’; an avant-garde slice of pop that blends elements of electro, jungle and dance – all while impassioned vocals scream about being cool before finishing with sensual heavy breathing. ‘Dodecahedron’ has a rhythmic and uncompromising style full of broken beats, while ‘A Brighter Tomorrow’ has the touch of optimism its title suggests.
‘Life Hex’ offers a nod to 90s horror films like The Craft with its creepy undertones and touch of Primal Scream’s ‘Vanishing Point’. There’s then an ear-piercing climax that recalls Times New Viking at their most assertive. There’s a tribal stomp running through ‘ist halt so’, while ‘Cursive’ is loud, noisy and ultimately glorious. ‘I’ll Ask Her’ ends the record with rants about colleges and dating sisters, culminating in the repeated mantra of ‘They’re all fucking crazy now’.
Vicious and visceral in equal measure, ‘URGH’ is a brutal, brilliant force of nature.
