Frog – ‘Frog for Sale’ album review

Frog for Sale album artwork

Singer-songwriter Daniel Bateman, also known as Frog, releases eight studio album ‘Frog for Sale’ on 17 April, 2026. An album about ‘how money sometimes gets in the way of love’, it finds Daniel taking inspiration from Buddy Holly and Paul McCartney .

The album opens with ‘Bad Time to Fall in Love Again’, a subtle, quieter anti-folk song with echoes of Sparklehorse as Daniel pleads with his darling to stay with him over glockenspiel-enhanced tones. This is followed by the Beach Boys-esque sound of ‘Best Buy’, a DIY piece that talks about being a ‘jerk at work’ and asks ‘Why don’t you just get married to the next guy?’ ‘Dark Out’ is more jaunty and baroque with Laurel Canyon elements coming to the fore.

‘Yonder This Way Comes’ is a country ditty with super-sweet words – ‘Who’s that young thing who says she loves your songs?’ – while ‘Stole My Heart’ is an effects-laden outpouring with elements of Cameron Winter as Daniel sings ponders how ‘I just don’t know how long I’m gonna make it’. ‘Max Von Side-eye’ tells a story about an unforgettable character, while ‘Lois Lane’ continues the troubadour style with talk of hookers, motherfuckers and speeding trains.

‘Professional’ has a dreamy and trance-like sound backing up its tender touch while ‘Je Ne Sais Pas’ has the words ‘I won’t give up’ being delivered with increasing defiance. ‘Wish Upon a Falling Star’ has a really cute finish and almost magical touch in its atmospherics, while the closing ‘Beg, Borrow, Steal’ tells the story of a girl who’s ‘a lot of crazy’ over a breezy bass line.

‘Frog for Sale’ is another fantastic album from one of the finest songwriters around.
