The Anchoress (featuring Eaves Wilder) – ‘Damsels’

The Anchoress has shared ‘Damsels’, the second single to be taken from forthcoming album ‘As We Once Were’ (out on 7 August, 2026). Regarding the themes of the track, Catherine Anne Davies said she looked to her regular touring partners, Manic Street Preachers: ‘It takes inspiration from the history lessons I got as a teenager listening to ‘Faster’ and ‘PCP’, except this time it’s strictly a girl zone.’

With a slightly electronic soundscape to open that soon morphs into something more dreamy and atmospheric, Catherine’s vocals glide over as she recalls a number of feminist icons – ‘Juana Ines was banging on the window, Aphra Behn was written on the window’ – before a powerful defiance shines through at the challenges women of all ages still face today: ‘You can’t say that we don’t play fair, equality offends your ego’.
