Following hot on the heels of their self-titled debut album in February this year, Railcard – a cult indie supergroup formed when Rachel Love (Dolly Mixture), Ian Button (Papernut Cambridge, The Penrose Web) and Peter Momtchiloff (Heavenly, Would-be-goods) realised they were all born within weeks of each other in 1962 – return with ‘Two Steps at a Time’ on 18 September, 2026.

The title track opens the record with gorgeous pop hooks, a whistling solo and repeats of the title as Rachel ponders her options. This is followed by the self-referencing ‘1962’, which has the words ‘All our birthdays are close together, that’s why we formed a band, that’s why we’re here’ delivered over a Primitives-meets-Altered Images soundtrack. ‘Hillman Minx’ has more of a spy film soundtrack, although the words are super sweet and sensitively delivered: ‘I know that nothing will happen as long as we are together, the road will go on forever’.

‘Foxy’ nails the C86 sound of the ’80s with glockenspiel and harmonies at the forefront while ‘I’m a Disaster’ will take you back to the ’60s with its classic rock & roll sound and dual gruff-sweet vocals: ‘I’m a disaster waiting to happen.’; ‘You shouldn’t waste your time on me’. ‘Unstable Neighbour’ brings psychedelic tendencies and breezy hooks to the story of a man who’s ‘not very kind, says he can hear me changing my mind’.

‘When You Say You Love Me Something’s Wrong’ is a song about how you’ll listen to someone about anything, except when it comes to the deepest of connections: ‘If you told me that Tuesday was Wednesday I’d believe you. If you said the sea was the sky, I wouldn’t ask why’. The penultimate ‘Snow Blind’ is more of a dream pop offering with talk of fantasy and mysteries – ‘You’re not who you seem to be’ – while ‘Sunday Sun’ closes the album with touching tenderness: ‘We don’t need anything, just take your time’.

‘Two Steps at a Time’ shows Railcard continue to be on the fast track to indie-pop heaven.
