Sister Leona

Fleet-based trio Sister Leona have a sound that harks back to the glory days of grunge in the early 90s but there’s enough of an indie-punk vibe to see them happily sit at home in any contemporary scene. Singer Jake Buckley’s vocals have the same kind of effortlessness sneer that served Evan Dando so well in The Lemonheads, but there’s also a touch of experimentation in the stop-start nature of some of the songs, especially on ‘A Great Day’. Meanwhile, ‘Rat Cave’ ups the tempo and brings to mind My Vitriol or early Manics with its sneering don’t-give-a-shit attitude.

Adding a special cover of ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’ to their set, the band made their live debut at Aldershot’s West End Centre when they supported Our Lost Infantry back in December. Since then they have been busy writing and recording and played a few more shows, including at the Boileroom in Guildford and the Joiners in Southampton. Hopefully we’ll be seeing and hearing a lot more from them soon.
