One of our favourite new bands at Reading Festival last year, Skaters’ brand of post-punk brought back memories of the refreshing wave of US bands that came about in the early 2000s while also offering a nod to the UK and the likes of The Jam, The Clash and the Buzzcocks. They also confused the Reading crowd by closing their set with a superb cover of ‘Caught by the Fuzz’ (as an aside, how and why don’t the youth of today seem to acknowledge Supergrass as one of our great singles bands?). Now, ahead of their debut album ‘Manhattan’, the band release the video for ‘Miss Teen Massachusetts’.
Slightly psychedelic and with a nod towards Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and their contemporaries, the song is full of memorable hooks and strained vocals, while the video follows the fortunes of a number of members of a psychiatric clinic. Already praised by The Strokes’ Nick Valensi, New Yorkers Skaters bring the same kind of freshness and energy to the industry that ‘Is This It?’ did all those years ago.
