China Bears – ‘Night Calls’ stream

Having recently been hand-picked by Frank Turner to play a Last Minutes show at his Lost Evenings festival, China Bears have released another fine indie-pop tune n the shape of ‘Night Calls’ – and it’s a hair-raising anthem tinged with regret.

Ivan Proctor states how ‘You think I don’t recognise your heartbreak through that smile’ and ‘Why am I so far away. I want to be by your side like you were there by mine’ over bewitching hooks before the melodic Magic Gang-esque chorus kicks in: ‘Sorry, I missed those night calls. What the hell’s a friend for if they can’t take the wheel?’

There’s a further breakdown as Ivan sings about things getting tough at night and reflects on whether he has done enough in the past to help a loved one through a tough time – and whether an apology is good enough. The song finishes with a combination of towering guitars and powerful harmonies.
