False Advertising’s ‘The Sorry Window’ is the Manchester band’s first full-length release in six years. It explores the tension between ambition and self-doubt with searing honesty…
The fractured indie-pop of ‘Narrow’ kicks off the album with Jen’s voice front and centre: ‘Now it breaks and it takes my breath right from my lungs’. It finishes with a touch of glockenspiel before the album moves on to recent single ‘Acid Rain’, a bright, breezy and boisterous bass-led bop with hooks to die for and instantly relatable lyrics: ‘I don’t want to feel it’.
‘Don’t Ask Me’ offers a poignant tale of heartbreak and hesistancy – ‘I don’t want to be yours, I don’t know who you’ve been’ – while ‘Falling Apart Forever’ lives up to its title with anxiety-led lyrics (‘When I enter the room you go away, and when I go you stay’) being delivered over scuzzy guitar. ‘Weak Ties’ follows with its calm tones offering an introspective respite.
The title track reminded us of The Big Moon or Bleachers with its power pop hooks and direct questioning: ‘What are you talking about?’ ‘You’ll Never’ brings in the heavier, crunching riffs in mathy and melodic style, while ‘Next Big Thing’ again has words that everyone living in the current times can relate to – ‘I suspect that the worst thing is happening’ – amidst healthy and therapeutic screams. The closing ‘Higher Ground’ has an electric undercurrent as Jen asks ‘Do you want to be alone in this city?’
There’s no need to apologise, ‘The Sorry Window’ is a record you’ll be happy to let into your life.
