Australian indie-rockers Sesame Girl have released ‘Butterfly Wing in a Silver Locket’, an EP filled with six songs that are a delicate and sublime as the title would suggest. Throughout the EP, Heather Duncan ruminates on people, possessions, moments and memories.

‘Wings of a Butterfly’ opens the EP in genteel fashion as Heather sings about how ‘Summer fades away on the wings of a butterfly and then reassures the subject ‘You are here forever’. ‘Kick in the Teeth’ follows in this emotional Soccer Mommy vein as Heather nervously asks the subject of her affections: ‘Are you in love with me’. After talking about walking home in the ‘lover”s T-shirt, she recalls how ‘When we are together, I don’t ever wear a bra’ as she realises she is worthy of love. The band describe ‘Superstar’ as ‘a sincere ode to friendship’ and celebrates how good it feels to share in their success – and be there for others when they are having a tough time: ‘I want to give you everything you deserve’.

‘Rubberband’ increases the tempo with melodies out of a Momma-meets-Tigers Jaw jam session and a statement we should all live by: ‘Don’t fuck with my friends’. ‘Back to Texas’ asks how you can replace someone who played a special part in your life – ‘Somewhere in America there is half of my heart’ – while ‘Prettiest Girl’ closes the EP with the poignant beauty of Mazzy Star as Heather struggles with moments of low self-esteem during intimacy (‘When there’s no mirror and the light is low’).

‘Butterfly Wing in a Silver Locket’ is a collection of songs that find Sesame Girl gently soaring with poignancy and power.
