Good Good Blood – ‘Keep My Powder Dry’/’When It All Wakes Up’

Good Good Blood have returned with new single ‘Keep My Powder Dry’. Opening with refined and hushed guitar hooks that recall the mid-noughties cult hero Adem, the song finds James Smith contemplating how ‘You steal my soul’ before blended harmonies end with him asking if anyone knows what they’re looking for. There’s a claustrophobic feel in both the sparse sound and lyrics, especially when he declares ‘I can’t see for the light, it burns my eyes’ before the final admittance of ‘I don’t know what I’m looking for, you don’t know what you’re looking for’. This Daniel Johnston-style tale of heartbreak continues through on the sinister b-side ‘When It All Wakes Up’, with its eerie alt-folk sound and whispered lyrics of being ‘all shook up’.
